Save the ILF – My Letter To David Nuttall MP (Bury North)
Below is a letter that I wrote to David Nuttall MP, my local constituency MP, to support the reinstatement of the ILF by the government.
Dear Mr David Nuttall MP,
A couple of years ago, the Court of Appeal ruled that the Government’s decision to close the Independent Living Fund was unlawful. On the 6th March 2014 it was announced that the ILF would end in June 2015.
Disabled people with high support needs will become prisoners in their own homes or forced in to institutions as it will be impossible for Local Authorities to maintain equivalent levels of ILF support.
Social care funding in England was cut by £991 million in 2011, £980 million in 2012 and local authority budgets have been cut by another 28%+ during the last parliament and the start of this one.
The independent living fund is cost effective. It should be kept and reopened to new applicants.
We were proudly told back in 2010:
“The test of a good society is you look after the elderly, the frail, the vulnerable, the poorest in our society and that test is even more important in difficult times when difficult decisions have to be taken than it is in, in better times”.
I would appreciate your help in putting the philosophy above into practice. Our Prime Minister seems to have forgotten these important words that he spoke – but you are in an ideal position to remind him.
Please support our campaign and back this campaign. I note that you did not sign EDM 113, however you could help Save the ILF by supporting it’s reinstatement by the government.
Let’s see if he’s willing to back the disabled and most vulnerable in our community…
